cabinet shop

The Ole Fjetland Cabinet Shop contains a collection of antique woodworking tools dating from the 1700's to the early 1900's. Included are unique items such as tools for making wooden shoes and cooper's tools for barrel making.

The collection of wood molding planes numbers over 100 individual tools. The cabinet maker in frontier towns often served as the undertaker as well. After all, he was the one who would make the coffins.

The first cabinetmaker in Fort Dodge was a man named Conrad Laufersweiler who also performed this job. His daughter married a man named Hilton and their son was Conrad Hilton, of hotel fame. The Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home is still in business here in Fort Dodge.
