The Sentinel Newspaper Office

The Sentinel Newspaper Office represents the home of the first newspaper in Fort Dodge and as its masthead boldly proclaims is "A paper for the family fireside, devoted to moral, intellectual and social improvement, and the dissemination of correct political purposes.".

Azariah S. White founded the paper in 1857 and today's Fort Dodge Messenger can trace its lineage directly to the Sentinel. The Sentinel first carried the story of the Indian raid that became known as the Spirit Lake Massacre, a prominent incident in Iowa history.
